Jeux FADOQ Montreal 2017

This year the running and the march happened in two different days, the running on Saturday, May 6th and the march on Monday, May 8th.

Running

On May 6th I went to the Maisonneuve Park for the running events. There would be three races: 10K, 5K and 2K. I chose to participate on the 10K, the first of the day.

Arriving at the park I was surprised to see a big crowd of people of all ages. The FADOQ had paired up with the YMCA for the Spring Challenge. At first I found that good, because with more people to run with, the running gets more interesting. However, in the end, the FADOQ event ended up being swallowed by the bigger event and we didn't even have a proper medal ceremony.

The day was cold and rainy, and the track in the park was full of pools of water, horrible conditions to run. I did more or less ok, finished my 10K in 52'02'', a minute slower than last year.

I got a silver medal as I finished second in my FADOQ age group (50-59). Among the FADOQ members I was fourth overall. The other three runners in front of me finished their 10K in less than fifty minutes, something that I have not yet been able to do.

March

Then, two days later I went to the Parc Jarry for the march events. This year I participated in the "prediction march" as well, just for fun.

The first event was the 1K prediction march. I predicted a time of 12'25'' (I had done two training laps with this time) and finished doing it in 11'45'', an error of 40'', which was good enough for third place (the winner had a 33'' delta). I have to improve my predicting skills for the provincials.

Then was the time for the 3K rapid walking event. As I had won this event at the provincials last year, I was the favourite. There was a woman who was with me all the time, she was just a few meters behind me and forced me to give my best, even when my shins were on fire. I ended up doing the 3K in 21'43'', only 5'' ahead of her. Wow!

In the end I got one medal of each type (gold, silver, bronze) in the three events that I participated. Great!

As for the provincials, it's all up in the air, because this year they will happen in Alma, a city far from Montreal. And I may have to undergo surgery, too. So, I don't know if I'll participate in the provincials.

July 12th update: I'm not going to Alma, there is no public transportation available at the times that interest me.
